JOB RESPONSIBILITIES                                    

  • Delivers scripted and ad lib material with professionalism, personality, and purpose  

  • Works with and guides reporters and producers in newscast production

  • Regularly plans, gathers and assembles stories on day-of news or special project assignments

  • Works with or without a photographer to gather and edit compelling video and captivating sound

  • Coordinates with news managers and producers to develop stories that go beyond surface details, that accentuate unique enterprise angles, and have exclusive content

  • Develops a network of sources who provide tips, early access to information, and allow the reporter to break stories of significance.

  • Will contribute pictures, video and text updates to mobile platforms consistently throughout the day

  • Can juggle multiple stories and projects at once, demonstrates exceptional time-management skills by meeting all deadlines under extraordinary pressure.

  • An ability to summarize information into easy-to-understand components

  • Unwavering journalistic integrity and ethical standards

  • Appears on behalf of the station at public events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven Anchor with ability to connect with viewers, in addition to strong reporting skills

  • Ability to operate mobile transmission devices and use latest technology

  • Can work in all weather conditions and carry up to 50 pounds

  • Has a valid driver’s license, can drive large vehicles over long distances, and a clear driving record

  • Ability to work varied shifts, including overnights and weekends   

  • Can deal with the stresses and pressures of time-sensitive newscast production

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Looking to hone your journalism skills at a dynamic and mission-driven education news site in the country’s biggest media market? Then you should apply for The 74’s paid winter editorial fellowship. The position will give you extensive backgrounding in today’s education storylines and policy debates, as well as experience researching, reporting and writing. The fellow will also be a key point person on our reader engagement team, gaining web production, multimedia and social media skills, for a daily audience of 200,000 followers.

  • The position is based out of the New York City office, and runs anywhere from three to 12 months (based on preference, qualifications and current staffing).

  • Start date can range anywhere from Jan. 1 to March 15.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
    Our editorial fellows are fully involved members of the newsroom, given the opportunity to pitch news and enterprise stories, collaborate with more experienced reporters, work with talented videographers and receive one-on-one editing and mentoring from award-winning editors. In short, you will emerge a stronger digital reporter with a bevy of compelling clips. Fellows also assist with special projects — think everything from breaking news to event planning to book publishing — and work with our reader engagement team to optimize our article layouts for reader retention, our multimedia content for impact and our social media pages for sharing. While New York-based, our fellow will also have the opportunity to work with our teams in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

  • POSITION REQUIREMENTS
    ● Is a new journalist in the field, or is studying journalism, public policy or mass
    communications
    ● Has previous experience in editorial, government, or web production
    ● Is well versed in today's top education stories, issues and flash points
    ● Has had writing published in mainstream outlets
    ● Has previously reported for a digitally driven newsroom
    ● Can provide references

  • Anchor the morning newscast, Monday through Friday

  • Gather and write news content for multiple platforms, including posting stories on social media

  • Report live on location from various news events

  • Research and develop news stories

  • Perform various community service activities for station, including performing as master of ceremonies for public service events and as host/hostess for station events

  • Periodically required to drive personal or company vehicle to cover various assignments

  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • College degree preferred

  • Anchor experience required; 2+ years anchor experience strongly preferred

  • Quality journalism, writing, and editing experience is a must.
